In a statement to the House of Commons, UK's Foreign Secretary David Lammy referred to ousted Syrian president Bashar Assad as "the rat of Damascus," starkly contrasting with the earlier reverence some had for him as the "Lion of Damascus." Lammy remarked on Assad’s downfall, noting, "Now we see the reality," as the Syrian leader fled to Moscow, symbolising his retreat in defeat. This comment followed the dramatic collapse of over fifty years of Assad family rule, as insurgents broke out from a rebel-held enclave and rapidly advanced towards Damascus, capturing city after city in just a few days.
